The project investigates how climate change and different forest management systems affect the structure, biodiversity, and resilience of mountain Norway spruce forests in Europe. Through collaboration between Switzerland, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Romania, 500 sample plots representing a wide range of management types—from unmanaged to intensively managed forests—will be analyzed. The study will assess the biodiversity of key functional groups (soil microorganisms, plants, fungi, insects, and birds) and use modeling and remote sensing methods (LiDAR, drones, and satellite data) to predict future forest development. The results will support the identification of best management practices to preserve biodiversity and enhance the resilience and sustainability of spruce mountain forests under changing climatic conditions.

Тези гори имат ключово екологично, икономическо и културно значение в алпийския биогеографски регион, поради което е от съществено значение да се разберат възможните бъдещи посоки на тяхното развитие и да се осигури запазването на тяхната функционалност и устойчивост.
